The Fire of 1947 wiped out nearly 70 summer homes and 170 year round residents homes. The Depression had taken its toll and many of the summer homes were never rebuilt.

Remnants of these early homes can still be seen near Bar Harbor.

Bar Harbor never regained its standing as the premier spot for vacation homes. Today it is better known with its hotels and B&Bs as a tourist spot while Seal Harbor and Northeast Harbor are now home to the summer population and their mansions.
