Before cars were allowed on Mount Desert Island, steamboats were the primary mode of transportation to Mount Desert. With the development of Bar Harbor as a summer resort, and later the villages of Northeast Harbor and Seal Harbor, the steamboats were essential in transporting not only people, but construction materials, horses, and other important goods.

This exhibit was put together by the 2007 sixth grade at Mount Desert Elementary with the Great Harbor Maritime Museum.
